This was the view from my driveway about 6:15 this evening as I was leaving home to head to Modesto. On the radio, Tim McGraw’s new song Still was playing. It was the first time I had heard it and it matched the scene perfectly. We’ve all had those moments that are so profound, you can’t ignore your senses. Moments when you have to stop and take notice of the beauty and glory around you and acknowledge the presence of God. After much examination of the schedule for the next 8 weeks, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. The photo doesn’t do justice to the beautiful light that was filtering through those clouds… and the words from a song forced me to stop dead in my tracks. I was instantly reminded of Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Palm Sunday March 28, 2010

Palm Sunday… again. It seems like only yesterday we were preparing for Easter and here it is upon us again. In the Mediterranean world, palms were used to cover the walk way of someone very important. (Much like we use a red carpet today.) As Jesus rode into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, he was welcomed as a king with the crowd waving palms in honor of him. I love the tradition of the distribution of the palms to the parishioners on Palm Sunday. I usually keep mine in the visor of my car. Did you know that the left over palms will be burned next year for the ashes to be distributed on Ash Wednesday?

The official beginning of Lent. Leroy and I went to the 7:00 am mass at the convent before heading off to work. The priest talked about Lent as a joyful season and how we are a hopeful people amid suffering. Traditionally, we don’t think of Lent as full of joy, but why not? If you put it that way, it doesn’t sound so bad. I’m giving up profanity and complaining… and I’m not going back 40 days from now. I want these changes to be permanent. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
